That's the whole mission, in one sentence. Everything Black Diamond Support Network does is measured against it.
In one generation, everyday life moved online. Banking, healthcare, government services, staying in touch with family — all of it now assumes a smartphone, an email address, and the confidence to tell a real login page from a fake one.
In towns like ours, that shift landed hard. Bank branches closed. Services went “digital first.” And fraud followed the same road in — Nova Scotians lose real money every year to scams that a ten-minute conversation could have prevented.
The knowledge to fix this already exists. What small towns lack is a local, trusted, patient way to deliver it. That's the gap Black Diamond was founded to close.
Four values run every workshop, every visit, and every dollar we spend.
We are not a call centre or a website funnel. We are local people helping local people, in rooms where everyone knows the coffee's on. Trust is the product; everything else follows from it.
No jargon, no talking down. If a neighbour can't repeat the lesson back in their own words, we haven't taught it yet. Plain language is a safety feature, not a style choice.
The technology changed fast and quietly. Not keeping up is not a personal failure — and in our rooms, nobody is ever made to feel like it is. Patience is a founding principle.
Like the diamond in our name, this network is being built for the long term: real registration, real accounting, real partnerships — an institution Westville can rely on for decades, not a one-season project.
“I started Black Diamond because I kept meeting the same person: a good neighbour, smart as anyone, one scam text away from losing money they couldn't afford — or locked out of services they'd paid into their whole lives. The fix was never more technology. It was a person, in the room, with time to explain it. That's what we're building.”
